Common questions
Most issues are answered below. If yours is not, the form at the end reaches us directly.
Why are my prayer times different from my local mosque?
Prayer times are calculated, and different authorities calculate them differently. The most common reasons for a difference are:
- The calculation method — the sun angles used for Fajr and Isha vary between authorities such as Umm al-Qura, the Muslim World League, and regional bodies.
- The Asr method — Standard and Hanafi conventions give different Asr times.
- Your location — a difference of even a few kilometres shifts sunrise and sunset slightly.
- Manual adjustments — a minute offset may be set in the app’s prayer settings.
- Local practice — many mosques apply their own precaution minutes to the announced time.
Choose the calculation method used by your country or mosque in the app settings. Where a difference still matters to you, follow your local mosque.
Why is the Qibla compass moving?
The compass uses your device magnetometer, which reacts to magnetic fields around it. Common causes of an unstable reading:
- A phone case or stand containing magnets, including MagSafe accessories
- Nearby electronics, speakers, laptops, cars, lifts or reinforced concrete
- The compass needing calibration — move the device in a figure-eight motion
- Holding the phone tilted rather than flat and level
Step away from metal and electronics, calibrate, and hold the device flat. Compass accuracy depends on device hardware and surroundings, so treat the reading as guidance rather than a guaranteed bearing.
Why did I not receive an Adhan notification?
Notifications are delivered by the operating system, so a missed alert usually comes from a device setting:
- Notification permission for MADAAR is off, or alerts are set to silent delivery
- The device is in silent mode, Do Not Disturb or a Focus mode
- Battery optimisation or low power mode is restricting background activity
- Background activity or background refresh is disabled for the app
- The Adhan sound for that particular prayer is switched off in the app’s notification settings
Check notification permission first, then Focus and battery settings, then the per-prayer settings in the app.
How do I change my prayer calculation method?
Open the app settings, go to the prayer times section, and choose the calculation method and Asr method that match your country or mosque. Manual minute adjustments for individual prayers are available in the same place.
Menu names may differ slightly between app versions. If you cannot find the option in your version, send us the app version number and we will point you to it.
Can I use MADAAR without location permission?
Yes. You can set your city manually instead of granting location access. Prayer times and Qibla direction are then calculated from the city you choose.
You can change or withdraw location permission at any time in your device settings.
How do I delete my data?
Settings, Athkar progress and Quran bookmarks are stored on your device. Delete them in the app where that option is available, or remove the app to clear everything it stored locally. To have anything you sent through support deleted, email us and we will remove it.
Full detail is in the privacy policy.
How do I report incorrect Quran content?
Report it directly and it will be prioritised. Include the Surah and Ayah number, the translation or reciter you were using, and a screenshot if you can. Reports about Quran text are checked against the source before anything is changed.
Reporting a Quran content error
Quran text and translation reports go to a prioritised queue.
